Aurangabad, APRIL 30

In a tragic incident, three private sanitary workers died of suffocation after getting trapped in a septic tank when they were cleaning the premises of a house at Sonal Nagar, here on Friday evening.

The three are aged between 20 and 22 and have been identified as Lucus Bandu Gaikwad, Baba Sayyed Baig and Prakash Gaikwad. Passers-by retrieved their bodies after a long struggle. Sources said one of them was still conscious but breathed his last on the way to hospital.

Eyewitnesses said while cleaning the septic tank, one worker fell into it, and in their bid to save him, two others also got trapped and fell unconscious. On being informed, chief officer of Jalna Municipal Council Nitin Narvekar, police inspector, Prashant Mahajan, assistant police inspector Nisha Bansode and councillor Mahaveer Dhakka attended the scene and sent the bodies for autopsy to the Government Hospital.

Sanitary workers often face risk as they come in a direct contact with human waste and are exposed to illness. Toxic gases in septic tanks and sewers can lead to loss of consciousness and even death.
