Aurangabad, May 11:

The famous variety of Tommy Atkins mango has been planted in the Nizam-era Himayat Bagh. The mango is attracting everyone's attention due to his reddish color.

The American mango has the same luster as exotic apples. The citizens are well aware of the green and yellow mangoes, however this red coloured mango is turning heads. The head of the sweet lime research center, Dr Sanjay Patil said that this Tommy Atkins mango from Florida, USA is famous in Europe. It is also in high demand, especially in London. Under the National Horticulture Mission, Indo-Israel Action Plan, non-native mangoes were planted on seven hectares in Himayat Bagh in 2014. Around 1800 saplings of different varieties were produced. The productivity of mango in Israel is 25 tons per hectare. In comparison, Maharashtra has only four or five tons. Research was done at the Keshar mango center to bridge the gap and increase productivity. Israeli advanced technology was used for this. In it, Maya, Lily, Tommy Atkins, Kent, Amrapali and Palmer varieties were compared with Kesar mango varieties. This year the trees have produced good quality Atkins mango. Although it is a non-native variety, the difference between land and climate makes a difference in taste and aroma. But the produce of this mango has been successful.

Sold under the Lily variety

This reddish mango from America is being sold here under the name Lily. The dark red color attracts attention said, contractor Sunil Salampure.
