Hearing on AMC election petition after one month

Aurangabad, March 18:

The hearing on the petition filed in the Supreme Court challenging the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) election process will be conducted before the registrar on April 20. The court is yet to receive four important affidavits. Hence the state government has been given four weeks to submit the affidavit, while for the state election commission (SEC), it is the last chance to submit the affidavit.

The SEC had declared reservation of wards for the AMC elections in January 2020. The reservation process was challenged by five persons, including former corporator Sameer Rajurkar through filing a petition in the Supreme Court. The reservation of wards is wrong, and its process was done as per the convenience they had claimed. Meanwhile, the Apex Court had granted a status quo. The court, however, had allowed all the respondents to submit their say through affidavits. So far, three affidavits had been submitted by the municipal commissioner, the divisional commissioner and one another. The state government, SEC, sugar commissioner and the district collector had not yet submitted the affidavits.

Presently, the case is pending with the registrar. It is learnt that after the submission of all affidavits, then the case will be put up before the court. Meanwhile, the SEC had submitted an application seeking permission of the Apex Court to publish the voters' list and invite objections and suggestions upon it. The decision is yet to be taken upon it, said the sources.
