Number of aspirants for IITs declining, craze continues

Aurangabad, Oct 21:

Number of aspirants for Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) from the city is declining for the past three years in the city if the data of Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)-Advanced is to be believed.

Each candidate must qualify JEE-advanced to secure admission in IITs of the country. The number of aspirants from the city is declining for the past three years.

Even on the national level, the number of candidates applying for JEE-advance has gone down in recent years.Over 3,300 students appeared for the JEE-Advanced in the city in 2018 while in 2019, it was 3,100.

More than 2,300 candidates took the test in 2020.However, the craze continues for the top engineering and technology institute as over 43,000 qualified it on the national level, for more than 16,000 seats. The reasons for declining in aspirants varies from not getting a branch or institute of choice, exploring the right branch in other institutes or faculty.

Commenting on this, Sawan Chudiwal, an IItian said that number of aspirants may have come down, but, the importance of IITs is still there.

“Many a time, students appear for JEE-Adv and National Eligibility cum- Entrance Test (NEET) simultaneously. Suppose they do not get a branch of their choice in IITs. In that case, they go for National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institute of Information Technology (IITs) for their branch or other courses another faculty like medical or science,” he said.

Sawan claimed there is a tough competition to take admission to the first 10,000 seats even today, so, this speaks of the importance of IITs.Replying on the point of drop-out ratio, he said that the IITs had launched a one-year preparatory course to reduce drop-out figure.

He informed this newspaper that the institutes coach newly admitted students for a year in the preparatory court. Saksham Zanjari, who has cracked JEE-adv 2020, said that after qualifying the entrance test, it is very prestigious to get admission to branch and institute of one’s choice.

“Nowadays, the choice of the branch is essential as one’s career depends on it. Therefore, those who cannot obtain admission seat in the required branch, they move to private colleges or other national level colleges to secure admission in the branch of choice,” he said. He said the importance of IITs has not gone down as lakhs of youths prepare for several years to crack the test to secure admission in IITs.
