PWD waiting for sanctioning of proposal for road work

Aurangabad, Oct 23:

The returning rains have caused havoc in Marathwada. As a result, the roads in the division are badly damaged. However, two months ago the Public Works Department (PWD) had submitted a proposal of Rs 114 crore for filling potholes and Rs 23 crore for immediate repairs to the state government. However, not a single one of them has been approved. Meanwhile, another proposal of Rs 1.64 crore has been submitted to the government for temporary repair of roads and bridges damaged by rains and Rs 25.50 crore for permanent road repairs.

The construction department had requested the government to approve a proposal of Rs 23 crore, instead of Rs 114 for repair of roads if the government is short of funds due to Covid-19 measures. However, not a single one of the proposed proposals has received a green signal. However, due to heavy rains till the end of September, the roads and bridges in Jalna and Aurangabad districts are in a very poor condition. After surveying such roads, the government had asked how much funds are expected for temporary repairs and permanent repairs. Accordingly, the circle office of the PWD has demanded Rs 1.64 crore for temporary repair of roads in these two districts and Rs 25.50 crore for permanent repairs.

Contractors demanding advance payment

For the last few years, the government has been reluctant to provide funds to almost all the districts, including Aurangabad. However, many contractors have done the road work in anticipation of sanctioning of funds. However, contractors have not received payment of bills for years. PWD officials requested the contractors to repair the roads damaged by the rains. But contractors are now demanding advance payment for the work.
