State excise department reels under shortage of staff

Aurangabad, Jan 21:

The state collects about Rs 12,000 crore in revenue every year through the state excise department. Of this, about Rs 4,000 crore is generated from Aurangabad district. However, the total number of officers and employees in the state excise department is only 38 in Aurangabad district. This is increasing the workload on the employees.

Aurangabad district has the highest number of breweries and distilleries. Officers of the state excise department are present on duty in these companies. The revenue from these companies is deposited directly with the government. Apart from this, the employees also have to deal with the illegal sale of liquor and counterfeit liquor. They also require to do arrests and confiscations. The office issues several permits and licenses and renews permits to various hotels and bars. The district has low cases of illegal liquor smuggling. However, the department faces a major challenge in curbing counterfeit liquor. The department is facing major difficulties due to the insufficient number of staff. The current staff is working under a tremendous workload. An increase in the number of employees will definitely speed up the process and increase revenue collection, the officials said.
