Woman commits suicide with son (3) in Nanded, hubby’s Covid death came a rude shock

Aurangabad, April 15

In a heart-rending incident, a 35-year-old woman along with her three-year-old son ended her life by jumping into a lake at Sunegaon near Loha in Nanded district of Marathwada soon after learning about her husband’s Covid death, on Tuesday night. The incident came to light on Wednesday morning.

The deceased woman has been identified as Padma Gandam, her husband as Shankar Gandam (40) and son as Lalli. The incident has left two young daughters of the ill-fated couple orphans.

According to details, the Gandam couple was working as labourers to earn their bread-and-butter. The family is native of Santoshnagar of Nizamabad in Telangana and lives in a locality behind a Balaji temple at Loha. Shankar’s antigen test report received positive on Tuesday after which he was admitted to the sub-district hospital of the town. He succumbed to the deadly viral disease in the evening on the same day. Padma came to know about Shankar’s death hours after he died. Unable to bear the rude shock of her husband’s death, Padma left two daughters of 7 and 5 years at home, took the son with her and left the home in a huff at 9.30 pm and jumped into the lake at Sunegaon near Loha on Tuesday night.

The villagers spotted two dead bodies floating on the water at 7.30 am on Wednesday. Police fished the dead bodies out of the water and referred them to a hospital for examination and post-mortem. Chinnama Gandam of Nizamabad gave formal information of the incident to the police after which a case of accidental death was registered in the Loha PS. PSI Karhe is on the case.

It turned out to be their last meeting

Shankar underwent an antigen test at the Loha hospital on Tuesday morning and received his report positive to the coronavirus. He was immediately admitted to the hospital by the doctors, who started his treatment. Padma came to the hospital and met him at 5.30 pm on the same day. Shankar died hours after the meeting. Thus, it turned out to be the last meeting of the husband and wife in their life.
