The successful conclusion of the 13th edition of the IPL has forced the BCCI to think about adding a 9th team in the cash rich league. The BCCI is reportedly keen to expand the tournament ahead of the next season. The board is likely to release the tenders for the new teams in the coming days. Reports stated that the board was set to bring the tender post Diwali which was celebrated on Saturday (November 14). As of now, there is no clarity on the entire matter as the BCCI has kept things under the wrap. There is speculation that two teams could be added – one in Ahmedabad and another in a Uttar Pradesh city of either Kanpur or Lucknow. Pune is also in the fray.

While the BCCI has remained silent on the possibility of adding new teams to IPL ahead of the next season, Bangalore Mirror has reported that the franchises have been informed about the likelihood of one extra team. The report further stated that the Adani Group in Ahmedabad and Sanjiv Goenka’s RPSG Group are the two known interested parties. Addition of a new team will make the mega auction mandatory and the franchises are not ready for the same due to lack of time. With the same number of teams, the mega auction can also be deferred by a year. Speculations are also rife that Bollywood superstar Salman Khan - who owns a celebrity cricket league team - apart from producing movies and television shows is also interested in buying a franchise. Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla co-own Kolkata Knight Riders franchise while Preity Zinta is the co-owner of Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) franchise.
