The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 kicked-off in Chennai with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) taking on Mumbai Indians (MI) in the season opener on Friday. The match was held behind closed doors due to the worsening Covid-19 situation in the country and it is expected to be the same case throughout the tournament. Though fans aren't allowed in the stadiums, some officials of cricket boards and other members are. The RCB vs MI match at Chepauk was played inside an empty stadium but there were a few officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), state boards and other associations who attended the match.

However, with the fear of Covid only increasing with every passing day, the BCCI has put in a stricter regulation in place even for the officials who wish to attend matches. As per a report in the Times of India, all those who want to watch IPL matches at the Wankhede Stadium, will have to under RT-PCR tests and submit a negative report (not longer than 48 hrs old) before they enter the stadium. After BCCI's directive, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) informed the Apex Council members about the same. “The tests are mandatory even for those who’ve been vaccinated. The report will have to be produced at the time of entry on each match day,” MCA secretary Sanjay Naik wrote in the letter to Apex Council members. Mumbai is the worst-hit city in India when it comes to Covid-19 cases while Maharashtra remains the worst-hit state. Mumbai is recording over 9,000 fresh cases every single day of late while Maharashtra is close to touching the 60,000 cases mark on a daily basis.
