Joe Root became the 3rd England player after Colin Cowdrey and Alec Stewart to hit a century in 100th Test match. With this ton, Joe Root also became the eighth player and third English cricketer to achieve this feat. On the occasion of his 100th Test, Joe Root had scored his 50th half-century when he thumped a short ball from left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem to the deep midwicket fence. When he notched up his milestone, he registered several milestones. Joe Root has a magnificent record against India in India, averaging close to 60 with five fifties and one century prior to the knock in Chennai. In the 2016 series, Joe Root had a fifty-plus score in every Test match as he was the standout performer for England in which they lost 4-0 in the five-match series.

England's Colin Cowdrey, who played 114 Tests and one ODI, was the first-ever batsman to achieve this unique feat. Coming in bat at number three, the former England captain scored 104 off 247 balls to propel his side to a big total of 409. Following him on the list is Pakistan's Javed Miandad, who also holds the joint-record of playing six World Cups. West Indies' legend Gordon Greenidge and England's Alec Stewart became third and the fourth batsman respectively to score a century in their 100th Test. Five years after Stewart achieved the feat, Pakistan's former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq also joined the elite list. In the third Test of the series against India, Inzamam rescued Pakistan and propelled them to a huge score of 570. Ponting achieved the unique record as he slammed centuries in both innings of his 100th Test. Playing against South Africa in Sydney, Ponting scored 120 in the first innings and followed up with an unbeaten 143 to lead Australia to a successful chase of 287 in the fourth innings.
