Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) suffered a humiliating defeat against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, a huge controversy triggered off the field where legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar made a comment on air which did not go down well with the fans of Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma. As Gavaskar received flak on social media, Anushka took to social media to slam Gavaskar for his comment.Now Sunil Gavaskar, while speaking to India Today, has clarified his stance on the matter and has cleared that he never blamed her for Virat Kohli’s failures. He also stated he was just talking about a video of them playing in their apartment while also pointing out that he was just discussing about Virat’s batting practice during the lockdown.“Where am I blaming her? Where am I being sexist in this? I am just stating what was seen in the video which was maybe recorded by somebody in the neighboring buildings and then put up. Virat also had no practice and the only practice that they had was when they were seen them playing in their building compound and Anushka was bowling to him. That’s what I said “Where am I blaming her for Virat’s failures? I am only saying that the video said that she was bowling to Virat,” Sunil Gavaskar said.
Explaining his views further on the matter, the cricketer-turned-commentator also stated that he is the one who has always batted for wives going on a tour with their cricketer husbands and reiterated that he has not blamed Anushka at all in his comments. “You know me, I am the one who has always batted for wives going with husbands on tour. I am the one that a normal guy going to the office for a 9-5 job, when he comes back home, he comes back to his wife. Similarly, cricketers, when they go out for a tour or even when they are playing at home, why can’t they have their wives with them?“Because after their working hours are over, they have to get back to their wives like every other common man does. So I am not blaming her,” Sunil Gavaskar further added. Earlier in the day, Anushka Sharma had posted an Instagram story lashing out at Gavaskar asking for an explanation for accusing her for her husband Virat Kohli’s game. She also said that the former cricketer will have some other words or sentences in his mind to say about her husband’s performance rather than taking her name.
