Suspect in Sushant's death case seeks compensation of Rs 10 lakh for 'illegal detention'

Dipesh Sawant, former domestic help of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput who is  accused of procuring drugs for the late actor, has filed a writ petition before the Bombay High Court against the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), seeking Rs10 lakh in compensation. Dipesh Sawant has alleged illegal detention by the NCB in the drug case. Dipesh who was present at the house when the actor committed suicide on June 14 is presently out on bail. In his plea, he claimed violation of his fundamental rights by NCB officials who failed to produce him before the metropolitan magistrate court within 24 hours of taking him into custody. As per the petition, NCB took Sawant in their custody from his residence in suburban Chembur on September 4 at around 10 pm, but he was produced before the magistrate on September 6 afternoon some 36 hours later.

The petition also alleged the NCB wrongly recorded he was arrested on September 5 at 8pm. "The petitioner was in illegal detention and this is in gross violation of Articles 21 (right to life and liberty) and 22 (any person arrested to be produced before concerned court within 24 hours)," the plea said. Apart from compensation, it also seeks appropriate action against concerned NCB officials. For the unversed, he was earlier arrested by the NCB over charges of the procurement of drugs and alleged connection with peddlers. Sushant Singh Rajput died by suicide on June 14. Currently, three central agencies, including the Central Bureau Of Investigation (CBI), the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the NCB are investigation various angles in the Sushant Singh Rajput death case. The NCB is looking into a drug angle, under which Rhea Chakraborty, Sushant's girlfriend, along with her brother, Showik Chakraborty, and house manager Samuel Miranda was arrested.
