The Premier League has "unanimously and vigorously" rejected the plans for the proposed European Super League and is considering taking action against six clubs from the league who have signed up for the showpiece event.

The Premier League has "unmously and vigorously" rejected the plans for the proposed European Super League and is considering taking action against six clubs from the league who have signed up for the showpiece event.

A group of 12 European clubs on Monday confirmed their plans to launch a new European Super League. Among these 12, six belong to the Premier League -- Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Chelsea.

"The 14 clubs at the meeting unmously and vigorously rejected the plans for the competition. The Premier League is considering all actions available to prevent it from progressing, as well as holding those Shareholders involved to account under its rules," the Premier League said in an official statement on Tuesday.

"The League will continue to work with key stakeholders including fan groups, Government, UEFA, The FA, EFL, PFA and LMA to protect the best interests of the game and call on those clubs involved in the proposed competition to cease their involvement immediately," it further said. The European Super League has been met with severe backlash ever since reports started doing rounds in the media. Despite this fact, the 12 clubs have now confirmed the formation and format for the new competition.

"The Premier League would like to thank fans and all stakeholders for the support they have shown this week on this significant issue. The reaction proves just how much our open pyramid and football community means to people," the English top-flight concluded.
