COVID Vaccine: Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine could cause rare nerve disorder, FDA Warns

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a stern warning regarding the corona vaccine developed by Johnson & Johnson in the United States. The FDA says the vaccine may increase the risk of the rare neurological condition Guillain – Barré syndrome. Meanwhile, this is not the first time Johnson & Johnson's corona vaccine has been questioned. Earlier, there were reports of blood clots after receiving the vaccine.

Although regulators have found that the chances of developing the condition are low, they appear to be three to five times higher among recipients of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine than among the general population in the United States, according to people familiar with the decision. The warning was attached to fact sheets about the vaccine for providers and patients.

The action comes after the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reviewed reports of about 100 people developing the syndrome after receiving the one-dose vaccine. Almost all of them required hospitalization and one person died, the FDA said.

According to the FDA, 95 percent of these cases are considered serious and require hospitalization. In the United States, 12.8 million people, or about 8 percent, have been vaccinated with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. 14.6 crore people have been vaccinated by Pfizer or Moderna.

According to the FDA, Guillain – Barré syndrome occurs when immune system nerve cells become damaged, muscles become weak, and sometimes paralysis occurs. About 1 million people in the United States have this problem. However, most people who experience severe symptoms recover from this problem. Meanwhile, in early April, the FDA warned of a blood clot with low platelets in connection with the vaccine. The warning comes after a 10-day moratorium on vaccinations.
