BMC to shut 2 COVID centres in Dharavi as mortality rate goes down

In a recent development Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned to shut two of its Covid care centres in Dharavi. The decision has been taken following a marked dip in new cases in the slum area.

The Centre has also lauded the BMC for "actively" chasing the COVID-19 in Dharavi, saying proactive measures reduced the growth rate of the infection in Asia's largest slum to 1.02 per cent in June from 12 per cent in April.

The two centres were started in April after a sudden spike in cases in the slum area .

On June 23, Dharavi reported five cases—the lowest in a day since April 5. So far, it has reported a total of 2,189 cases. On an average in June, the area has been reporting less than 20 Covid cases in a day with an average growth rate of 1.1% compared with the previous month’s 4.3%.

The mortality rate has similarly reduced to 3.7% now from 5% in April.
