Asia's largest slum Dharavi in Mumbai notched zero cases on Friday - first time since the Covid-19 pandemic appeared in the congested settlement on April 1, health officials said.

The model of tracing, testing & treatment was found to be useful due to community participation & vital role played by private doctors in Dharavi with the guidance of bureaucracy & public health department, said Dr Pradeep Awate, State Surveillance Officer, Maharashtra.

"Dharavi model underlines importance of community-based model & community participation in any public health crisis," he added.

The credit for this great achievement goes to the municipal corporation, state government, police & people of Dharavi. It's a matter of great joy that no new case has been reported. It is a result of teamwork, said Mumbai South-Central MP Rahul Shewale.

At one point, it ranked as the worst hotspot and the most worrisome for the health authorities, but Dharavi now has a mere 12 active cases currently under treatment in local hospitals.

Till date, Dharavi has notched a total 3,788 cases, - compared with Mumbai's 289,800 - and just 12 active cases vis-a-vis the city's current total of 20,128.
