Fadnavis: Demand for fast-track court & appointment of Ujwal Nikam in Deepali Chavan suicide case

Deepali Chavan, who became a Forest Range Officer after passing the Forest Department examination was working in Harisal. While carrying out her duties as a forest ranger in a remote area like Harisal, Shivkumar was mentally and financial harassing Deepali Chavan.

Tired of this, Deepali Chavan ended her life by choosing the path of suicide. RFO Dipali Chavan had shot herself with her service revolver at her government quarter at Harisal. Opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis has asked Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to take the matter to court expeditiously and appoint Ujjwal Nikam as special public prosecutor.

Deepali Chavan, a 28-year-old forest ranger had to commit suicide and the accused are only transferred. After the agitation, Additional Chief Forest Officer M. S. Reddy was suspended.

In fact, an account-wise inquiry is required when criminal proceedings are ongoing. But, without issuing such order, an internal inquiry committee will be appointed. The government does not move without agitation for every phase. We have a question, why this MVA government insists on protecting every accused person? Fadnavis has demanded immediate appointment of senior women IPS officers to probe the Deepali Chavan case, speedy trial in the case and appointment of Ujwal Nikam as Special Public Prosecutor.

Chavan in her four-page suicide note, addressed to M S Reddy had accused Shivkumar of harassment. Her note lists series of mental and financial harassment including being verbally abused in front of her staff, being given torturous assignments, no recognition for her work, withholding her salary, sexually coloured remarks, no holidays for meeting family etc. On one assignment, she was made to patrol and walk for three days despite she already informing her superiors that she was pregnant. As a result, she suffered a miscarriage.
