Due to incessant rainfall that have been lashing the state for the last two to three days have caused a major crisis in Konkan region. On the one hand, cities like Chiplun, Mahad are submerged in water due to heavy rains, while landslides have occurred in many villages along the Konkan hills. A similar tragedy has taken place in Talai village in Mahad, where 35 people have died. Many people are also feared to be trapped under the rubble.

According to the information received, a landslide occurred at Talai village in Raigad yesterday evening. About 35 houses in the village were buried under this pile of rubble and a big accident took place. Heavy rains prevented aid from reaching the site. Meanwhile, local villagers have started the rescue operation and 32 bodies have been recovered from the buried houses. Villagers fear that 80 to 90 bodies are still buried under the pile.

Raigad District Police Superintendent Ashaek Dudhe said that rescue teams from NDRF, police, local administration and some organizations were assisting in the rescue operation. The injured are being airlifted out by helicopter. Citizens of Mahad Savitri flood are being evacuated by a helicopter. The administration needs three more helicopters for which efforts are underway.

Similarly, four units of NDRF in the district are involved in relief work at Mahad. The landslide took place at Talai on Thursday evening, but flood waters and mudslides on the way hampered rescue efforts at night. The rescue operation has been started from 12 noon today.
