Mumbai court orders 3 years rigorous imprisonment after man acid attacks wife

A court in Mumbai has sentenced a man to three years of rigorous imprisonment after he threw acid on his wife. The victim lost her one eye after the incident that took place on April 23, 2012.

The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 40,000 on the man. The victim, a mother of three worked as a social worker.

The accused identified as Nagnath Jadhav threw acid on his wife after he suspected his wife is having an extra marital affair, as per a report in TOI.

"It looked like the offence was committed in order to teach a lesson to the victim as he was allegedly had an affair with a person but this fact was not proved. The victim has two boys and a girl. Considering the aggravating and mitigating circumstances, it seems that the aggravating circumstances are on a higher footing. Therefore deterrent punishment has to be awarded to him," the court observed.

The court also ordered the District Legal Services Authority in Mumbai to inquire and decide the amount of compensation to the victim under the state government's compensation scheme.

The woman was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital and later referred to Sion Hospital where she was admitted for over 15 days. However, the defence rejected the woman's allegations and claimed someone from the neighbourhood attacked her.
