Mumbai Police Cyber Cell files FIR in Rashmi Shukla 'phone tapping' report

The Maharashtra Intelligence Department, Mumbai, today has registered an FIR in the case of leaking of the phone tapping report prepared by Rashmi Shukla, the ex-Commissioner, State Intelligence Department. The case has filed against unknown persons illegally obtained confidential letters and other technical confidential information from the State Intelligence Department.

An offense has been registered against an unidentified person under Section 30 of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, Section 43 (and), 66 of the Information Technology Act, 2008 and Section 5 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923.

The first investigation into the crime is being conducted by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Cyber Division, Crime Branch, Mumbai. Senior IPS officer Rashmi Shukla had intercepted the phone calls and exposing these names also threatened the privacy of the officials

Chief Secretary Sitaram Kunte has strongly criticized the move, saying it violates the Indian Telephone Act and undermines the freedom of the people concerned. The Chief Secretary presented his report to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday evening. Despite stamping the letter as TOP SECRET, Rashmi Shukla seems to have leaked the letter, which is very serious matter. If it is proved, she will be liable for strictest action against her," Kunte's report, which was made public, said.

BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis had alleged that the state government suppressed Shukla's letter or report, based on phone intercepts, on a `transfer scam'.
