Mumbai's lifeline local trains may start from September 1, said media reports.

The local trains were completely shut down for over two months in view of the coronavirus lockdown.

Earlier on June 15, both the Central and Western Railway had resumed their Mumbai suburban services over main and harbour lines. However, these suburban services were strictly meant for ‘essential staff’ as identified by the state government.

Over 8.5 million passengers commuted daily on the suburban networks spanning Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad before the lockdown.

Railways Protection Force has been deployed to impose strict social distancing norms.
