Amidst the backdrop of Covid pandemic city boxer Alfiya Pathan brought laurels to the country by clinching a gold medal in World Youth Boxing Championship at Poland on Thursday.

In the 81 above weight category, she knocked out Daria Kozoez of Moldova 5-0 in a one-sided affair and in the process ensured the seventh gold medal for India.

This was her maiden appearance in the youth world meet. She dominated the proceedings against her opponent with powerful punches and ultimately recorded the memorable victory.

Earlier in the semi-final, she recorded 3-2 victor over Poland’s Toborek Oliwia. Alfiya was unstoppable in her quarterfinals, thumping Hungary’s Reka Hoffmann in women’s heavy weight ( 81kg) category 5-0.

Indian women boxers put up sensational performances and created history . They concluded their campaign on highly successful note with seven gold medals . All the women finalists in action--Gitika (48kg) Naorem Babyrojisana Chanu (51kg), Poonam (57kg), Vinka (60kg), Arundhati Choudhary (69kg), T Sanamacha Chanu (75kg) and Alfiya Pathan ( 81kg)— registered victories and finished on the top of the podium. Previously Indian women had won five gold medals during the 2017 edition of Youth World Championships held in Guwahati. India women’s team also finished as the No.1 team in the ongoing Championship ahead of Russia with seven gold medals.

Earlier at international level she won the title at the 2018 Asian Junior Boxing Championship and then she joined to the youth age group in January 2020. She won the bronze medal I 80 category at the 3rd Nations Cup International Boxing Championship in Serbia.

She then bettered her performance and won gold medal in the 63rd National School Games. Her first medal at the 2nd Junior Nation Cup in 2018 when she won silver medal. . Recently , Alfiya won gold medal for India in the 30th Adriatic Pearl Tournament in Budva, Montenegro.

At domestic circuit She was finished in the top three since 2016 when she won the silver medal in 62nd National School Games (80 kg).

She then bettered her performance and won gold medal in the 63rd National School Games. Her first medal at the 2nd Junior Nation Cup in 2018 when she won silver medal of Maharashtra Boxing Association and Nagpur District Boxing Association have congratulated Alfiya and wished her best luck for future events.
