Challenge of safe seating arrangements for legislators during Winter Session

The winter session of Maharashtra State Legislature will be starting from December 7, 2020 in Nagpur amid coronavirus pandemic. There would huge challenge of following physical distancing in premises of Vidhan Bhavan and both Houses. The administration will be facing another challenge of providing safe seating arrangements to members of both Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. The shortage of space in comparison to Mumbai can become a major headache for the administration.

Special arrangements were made during two-day session held at Mumbai so that legislators can follow physical distancing insides houses. There was distance between two legislators and one seat was left vacant between them. Some members were made to sit in galleries of Vidhan Bhavan also. But administration will have to face challenge of calculating seating arrangements in Nagpur Vidhan Bhavan. The number of chairs in galleries of Vidhan Bhavan is low due to which number of members in galleries cannot go beyond certain limit. Similarly, the chambers of ministers have also limited space posing challenge to following physical distancing. New building has been constructed where chambers of ministers will be arranged. Despite of this, it would be challenge before administration to provide safe distance.

No decision yet

The administration’s team has not arrived from Mumbai to check seating arrangements. No specific decision has been taken yet about how seating arrangements of legislators will be in Vidhan Bhavan during winter session. A firm policy will be decided soon in this regard, said secretary of Legislature Rajendra Bhagvat.

Limitations on tiffins also

Large food tiffins come from outside in offices of ministers and parties. This can be a major concern during coronavirus pandemic. A request was made during Mumbai session to legislators that sealed food should be brought. All eateries in Nagpur Vidhan Bhavan are small and get congested. The administration will have to decide policy in this regard also.
