Handball row: Ex-SAI official RK Naidu slams 'suitability' criteria

Nagpur, June 19

Former regional director of Sports Authority of India (SAI) Roopkumar Naidu who was instrumental in launching SAI's handball training centre at RTM Nagpur University ground a few years back has slammed the selection panel for rejecting as many as nine national and international players who had applied for coach job at SAI's handball training centre.

In an exclusive talk with Lokmat Times Naidu raised several questions over the selection process and credentials of selectors. Naidu who has been involved in handball for the last 40 years said, “ To reject the players like Inderjeet Singh Randhawa and Dhiraj Bhoskar is a big insult of the players. They are NIS coaches and have fulfill all criteria to become coach. The selection panel can't reject them in such a manner”.

About suitability criteria, Naidu said who has deiced it? “International representation and NIS certificate are the main criteria. The main job of the selection panel is to give their recommendation to SAI and not to reject the candidature. The panel behaved in an immature and totally unprofessional manner. The university's director of sports can't decide the suitability of international-level players.

If you say no to anybody then you should have given proper justification for it”.

Naidu has also questioned the justification of the selection panel that some candidates were rejected for not submitting NOC from their institutions. “ It is nowhere mentioned that NOC will be required. Actually coach's post is contractual and nowhere is it mentioned that this is full-time post. As per criteria, the panel should have given an offer letter to the candidate and prepare the waiting list. But the procedure was not followed”, he said.

Naidu also took the objection over one selection committee member Ramesh Mankar. “ He is basically a basketball player and hardly played handball in his college days. What are his credentials?. In its interview panel, the university should recruit such persons who have knowledge of the game”.

To express his grievances Naidu wants to meet vice-chancellor of RTM Nagpur University“ The VC should give me time so that I can explain my grievances. If university wants to implement the re-selection process, then they should change the interview panel completely” he said.

Naidu said the basic aim behind launching SAI centre is to promote sports and encourage the former sportspersons who are willing to join it as the coaches. This is the medium to create avenues for them. The university authority instead of indulging in politics should look at it in a positive way”.

'SAI centre players can play for clubs'

On SAI centre's directives that its players can't represent the clubs in association's tournaments, Naidu said while getting training at SAI centre the boys and girls can play for their respective clubs in the tournaments. “ I think they have no clarity over the issue and there is a communication gap. Nowhere it is written that the players can't play for clubs. But for training purposes, the players should give priority to SAI and their practice timings should not have clashed”.
