Nagpur has more Covid beds per million compared to Mumbai-Pune

The city of Nagpur had more Covid beds available compared to Pune and Mumbai per million (10 lakhs) population. Infact Nagpur has been ranked much better compared to most of the big cities, when oxygen, ICU, ventilator, beds were considered.

Still when the second Covid wave, reached its peak in April, Nagpur’s health services fell apart, leaving people scouting for beds, oxygen and ventilators.

When NMC administration was questioned over this, they said that Nagpur gets patients form MP, Chhattisgarh as well as the adjoining districts of Vidarbha. Even in Covid period, a large number of patients are coming from other cities for treatment.

In the data released by the state government, the population of Nagpur district has been reported to be 46 lakhs. In March, the number of Covid patients started increasing and it peaked in the month of April.

The district administration including NMC commissioner Radhakrishnan B, district collector Ravindra Thakare, made concerted to augment the supply of Covid beds and oxygen to city hospitals. Beds were also reserved for Covid patients in private hospitals. Some political leaders and ministers also intervened, but there was not much improvement in the condition of ctiy. Patients and relatives were still suffering.

Compared to the statistics 36 others districts and cities of the state, the situation of Nagpur is much better and its is showing Nagpur district’s population at 4.6 million. There are 3,616 non-oxygen beds per million population, 2,162 with oxygen, 610 ICU and 217 ventilator beds for treatment of Covid patients.

Between there are 16,632 non-oxygen, 9,944 oxygen, 2,808 ICU and 996 ventilated beds available in Nagpur district.

Additional commissioner of NMC Jalaj Sharma said that the number of beds reserved for the treatment of Covid patients in Nagpur is more compared to the population per million. After Nagpur it is Mumbai, Pune, Sangli and Mumbai suburbs. In this regard, Nagpur was in a better position. Nevertheless, the pressure of outside patients always remains high in Nagpur and hence it is difficulty in getting beds at the peak, but at present the situation has improved.

According to Sharma, during the first wave of Covid, Covid patients were being treated in 66 private hospitals along with NMC hospitals. Till March, end there were 88 private hospitals, which increased to 146 in April. Administration has been working day and night so that Covid patients get better facilities.
