Nagpur, Jan 17

City doctors have been successful in removing a tumor from the brain of a four-month-old child, giving him a new lease of life.

Generally the ‘Ependymoma’ is diagnosed after three years of age, but the doctors diagnosed the tumor early and performed the successful surgery and removed the tumor.

A family from Umaria village, Madhya Pradesh came to a private hospital in Nagpur with their four-month-old son. The condition of the child was very bad. After the primary investigation in the hospital, the child was referred to neuro surgeon Dr Akshay Patil. Talking to Lokmat Times, Dr Patil said after preliminary diagnosis and looking at the symptoms of the child, we decided to take an MRI. But during MRI, the child was constantly moving and hence, the doctors had to take four MRIs.

Post the MRI it was confirmed that the child has tumor in small brain and there was water accumulation in the brain due to tumor.

The doctors therefore decided to move the brain water to stomach and performed both the surgeries, which lasted for around six hours.

The surgery was performed on December 30, and the child was discharged on January 7, from the hospital.

Dr Patil informed that anesthetists Dr Avantika Jaiswal and pediatrician Dr Sandeep Yadav also supported the surgery.

Cancerous lump

Dr Patil informed that ‘Ependymoma’ is a cancerous lump. This lump is diagnosed only after three years of age, but due to some tests and the symptoms, we could diagnose it early. The lump was affixed to the brain, so it was very tricky to get the surgery done. The condition of the child is improving fast and the recovery is good.
