Vidarbha women suffer first defeat

Nagpur, March 19

In a low scoring tie, Vidarbha lost to Delhi by 70 runs and thus suffered first defeat after winning three straight matches in Women’s Senior One-Day Trophy at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College ground in Chennai on Friday.

Chasing a small target of 138, Vidarbha were all out for just 67 in 34.4 in over.

Earlier Vidarbha bowlers did a great job by restricting Delhi to 137 for 9. However the pathetic batting performance led them down in the run chase .

Except for stand-in captain Disha Kasat, none of the Vidarbha players could even reach double-digit figures. Disha (21: 52 balls, 3x4) and Vaishnavi Khandkar (7: 57 balls) were off to a very slow start. They made 29 runs partnership for first wicket but consumed as may as 16 overs. Bharti Fulmali, who had scored three half-centuries in the earlier three ,atches was dismissed for just 9 runs off 18 balls. Bharti’s early dismissal put pressure on the other batswomen as they just surrendered meekly without offering any semblance of a fight. Vidarbha lost their last nine wickets for the addition of just 28 runs.

For Delhi medium-pacer Lalita Sharma triggered Vidarbha collapse by taking five wicket haul. Mandeep Kuar got up 2 for 4, while Sonia Lohiya and captain Babita Negi took a wicket apiece.

Earlier,Delhi skipper Babita Negi won the toss and elected to bat. They got off to a decent start. ith 34 for no loss after 11 overs, they looked solid. However When Kasat introduced Nupur Kohale, that ploy proved disastrous to Delhi as she quickly removed openers Shweta Sehrawat (16) and Vandana Chaturvedi (11) Once they lost the openers, Delhi eves’ struggle began.

Although Neha Tanwar (20) and Mandeep Kaur (18) tried to arrest the slide with a 42-run partnership for the third wicket, Vidarbha bowlers dominated the proceedings and dried up the runs.

Nupur finished with an impressive figures of 10-2-22-4 -- to repeat her last match’s performance. On Wednesday against Himachal, Nupur had figures of 9-1-19-4.Spinner Reena Paul (7-2-12-2) offered solid support from the other end whereas Disha Kasat chipped in with a wicket. Now Vidarbha will play their last league match against Karnataka on Sunday.
