Delhi Assembly Elections 2020: Round -up of Delhi constituencies (Part 2)

Gandhi Nagar Assembly Constituency 

Gandhi Nagar, under East Delhi, is one of the most congested colony with a population of around 3.5 lakh. It has one of the highest number of Muslim residents at 22 percent of the total population. The Gandhi Nagar Assembly Constituency is currently held by Anil Kumar Bajpai of ruling-Aam Aadmi Party. Bajpai got 45.24 percent of the votes in 2015. In 2013, Arvinder Singh Lovely of the Congress party had retained his seat and won against BJP's Ramesh Chand Jain. In 2008, Lovely beat BJP's Kamal Kumar Jain. In the 2020 election, Lovely faces Naveen Choudhary (Deepu) of the AAP, and Bajpai, who has now switched over to the BJP. Choudhary, who will be contesting for the first time on an AAP ticket from the Gandhi Nagar seat in the Delhi Assembly elections 2020, is a social worker.

Greater Kailash Assembly Constituency

A high-profile constituency of the Delhi Assembly, Greater Kailash is part of the South Delhi Lok Sabha constituency. In the upcoming election, Saurabh Bhardwaj of Aam Aadmi Party will seek a third term from the constituency. He will be up against Shikha Roy of BJP and Sukhbir Singh Pawar of Congress. Saurabh Bharadwaj will contest from the Greater Kailash Assembly constituency for the third time in a row on an AAP ticket. Dr VK Malhotra of the BJP was the first MLA from the constituency after its formation in 2008. Since 2013, AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj has been representing the seat. Bhardwaj defeated his nearest BJP rival in both 2013 as well as 2015 polls to the Assembly constituency. While the winning margin in the 2013 election was just above 13,000 votes, Bhardwaj won the 2015 polls by over 14,000 votes.

Najafgarh Assembly Constituency 

Najafgarh state assembly constituency is a very prominent assembly seat within the portals of the South West parliamentary district. During the 2015 Delhi Legislative Assembly election, AAP’s Kailash Gahlot won the Najafgarh constituency by defeating Indian National Lok Dal’s (INLD) Bharat Singh by 1,555 votes. In 2020, Aam Aadmi Party has again fielded Kailash Gahlot. Other prominent faces to contest the state assembly election from Najafgarh Assembly this year  are Ajeet Singh Kharkhari of Bharatiya Janata Party and Sahab Singh of Congress.

Matia Mahal Constituency

One of the largest constituencies in the National Capital, Matia Mahal has a high number of Muslim population and the main battle is to be likely between Congress and the AAP. Shoaib Iqbal, a veteran of Delhi politics will be contesting for AAP. Congress has given a ticket to Mirza Javed Ali for the 8 February polls. Meanwhile, BJP has fielded Ravinder Gupta.  Shoaib Iqbal, a veteran of Janata politics held this seat between 1993 and 2015. In the 2015 elections, Iqbal, who had by then shifted to the Congress, was defeated by AAP’s Asim Ahmed Khan by over 26,000 votes.

Model Town Assembly Constituency 

A part of the Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha constituency, the largely affluent area of the Model Town is likely to see a three way battle between Congress, AAP and BJP. This time around AAP has decided to field Akhilesh Pati Tripathi against former AAP MLA Kapil Mishra. Mishra is contesting on a BJP ticket. Meanwhile, Ms Akanksha Ola of the Indian National Congress will be also be contesting from Model Town Assembly constituency. The constituency is  currently held by Akhilesh Pati Tripathi of AAP. In the 2015 NCT OF DELHI Assembly Elections, he beat Vivek Garg of BJP. Akhilesh Pati Tripathi got 52.38 percent of the votes.

Rohini Assembly Constituency 

Rohini Assembky seat comes under the North - East Delhi constituency which is currently held by Vijender Gupta of BJP. Rohini has a lot of middle-class voters who have been traditionally BJP loyalists. In the 2020 Delhi Assembly election, the key candidates in the Rohini constituency are Rajesh Nama Bansiwala of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Vijender Gupta of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Sumesh Gupta of the Indian National Congress.

Rajouri Garden Constituency 

Rajouri Garden Assembky comes under the West Delhi Lok Sabha constituency. The seat is currently represented by Manjinder Singh Sirsa who contested a 2017 by-election as a joint candidate of BJP and SAD combine. In 2015 assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Jarnail Singh had won the seat. In 2013, Siromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate Manjinder Singh Sirsa had won the seat and prior to that in 2008, Congress had won the seat and Dayanand Chandila was elected as the MLA. In the 2020 Delhi Assembly election, the key candidates in the Rajouri Garden constituency are Dhanwanti Chandela of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Ramesh Khanna of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Amandeep Singh Sudan of the Indian National Congress.

Vikaspuri Assembly Constituency 

Vikaspuri is one of the biggest constituencies in terms of electorate in the Union Territory. The constituency s currently held by Mahinder Yadav of AAP. In the 2015 NCT OF DELHI Assembly Elections, he beat Sanjay Singh of BJP. Mahinder Yadav got 62.53 percent of the votes.In the 2020 Delhi Assembly election, the key candidates in the Vikaspuri constituency are Mahinder Yadav of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Sanjay Singh of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Mukesh Sharma of the Indian National Congress. Primarily dominated by the Jats, Vikas Puri also has significant Punjabi and Yadav communities.

Patparganj Constituency 

The Patparganj Constituency is where some of the biggest names are contesting for the Delhi Assembly elections. The constituency holds much significance as as its MLA is the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi. The Patparganj Assembly Constituency of NCT OF DELHI state is currently held by Manish Sisodia of AAP. In the 2015 NCT OF DELHI Assembly Elections, he beat Vinod Kumar Binny of BJP. Manish Sisodia got 53.64 percent of the votes. In the 2020 Delhi Assembly election, the key candidates in the Patparganj constituency are Manish Sisodia of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Ravi Negi of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Laxman Rawat of the Indian National Congress.

Delhi Cantt Constituency 

The Delhi Cantt Assembly Constituency is currently held by Surender Singh of AAP. In the 2015 NCT OF DELHI Assembly Elections, he beat Karan Singh Tanwar of BJP. Surender Singh got 51.82 percent of the votes.In the 2020 Delhi Assembly election, the key candidates in the Delhi Cantt constituency are Virender Singh Kadian of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Manish Singh of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Sandeep Tanwar of the Indian National Congress. The Aam Aadmi Party, BJP and Congress are the main contesters in this seat

Tughlakabad Assembly Constituency 

One of the most economically backward areas of Delhi the fight in this constituency is between AAP and the BJP. The Tughlakabad Assembly Constituency of NCT OF DELHI state is currently held by Sahi Ram of AAP. In the 2015 NCT OF DELHI Assembly Elections, he beat Vikram Bidhuri of BJP. Sahi Ram got 62.4 percent of the votes. In the 2020 Delhi Assembly election, the key candidates in the Tughlakabad constituency are Sahi Ram of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Vikram Bidhuri of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shubam Sharma of the Indian National Congress. Tughlakabad is primarily dominated by the Gujjars and migrants from Rajasthan.
