First coronavirus case reported in Northeast, person with UK travel tested positive

The first novel coronavirus case has been detected in Manipur, make it the first case in Northeast India, which had till date managed to remain untouched by the virus. The 23-year-old youth had returned home from UK and is currently undergoing treatment at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) hospital in Imphal.

The patient hails from Thangmeiband, Imphal West. On Monday, Manipur government had ordered complete lockdown of the state till March 31 as a precautionary measure to stop the spread of coronavirus. Essential services have been exempted from the purview of the lockdown. Manipur is among the 32 states and union territories that are under a complete lockdown to contain the rapid spread of coronavirus. The number of positive cases in the country is nearing 500 with 10 reported deaths.
