To tackle the problem of 'paan' stains on freshly colored road dividers on GS Road in Guwahati, the authorities here have covered the concrete separator with sheets of polyethylene. This has been done keeping in mind the proposed meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe in Guwahati on 15 December.

Before the VVIP meeting, the city's main road dividers were painted in black and white as part of the beautification work, but within minutes the dividers were lined with red stains of the paan.

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation has decided to cover the road dividers with plastic sheets to avoid painting it again and again.

Sources in the corporation said that even sheets of polythene could not prevent people from spitting paan on the dividers, but due to the sheets, the newly painted separator was left untouched by paan stains.

Municipal corporation personnel said that some people who come to the area who do not have a way of living in the society, after slowing down their vehicles, down the glass and spit the paan on the road dividers.
