New Delhi, July 1 The Tihar Jail authorities on Wednesday apprised a Delhi court that Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Shah has been accommodated in a separate cell and is being given medical facilities amid the coronavirus fear.

Shah had moved the court last week seeking a separate cell on the grounds of his weak health condition, including heart disease and low immunity, which he claimed made him prone to contracting the viral disease.

The plea from the separatist leader said, "Looking at the recent occurrences of COVID-19 in the central jail and the health condition of the accused, his life would be in danger if he comes in contact with the virus. Therefore, direct the jail authorities to put him in a separate cell."

In reply to his plea, Tihar Jail Superintendent on Wednesday told Additional Session Judge Dharmendra Rana that Shah has already been put in a separate cell and proper medical check-up and medication is being given to him.

The Kashmiri separatist leader was arrested in two cases of terror financing. Shah was first arrested on July 25, 2017 on charges of money laundering in a case dating back to 2005.

Again in 2019, the National Investigation Agency took him in custody in a probe pertaining to a separate terror funding case involving the mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, Hafiz Saeed. He is currently in judicial custody in both the cases.
