New Education Policy 2020: Students can select subjects of their liking across the streams

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the NEP 2020. The NEP 2020, will replace the last one framed in 1986. The policy brings in major changes in the governance and academic structure of school and higher education.

Under NEP 2020, there will be no rigid separations between arts and sciences, between curricular and extra-curricular activities, between vocational and academic streams.

The policy aims for holistic development of students by equipping them with the key 21st century skills. Students can select subjects of their liking across the streams.

Vocational education will start in schools from the 6th grade, and will include internships.

A new and comprehensive National Curricular Framework for School Education, NCFSE 2020-21, will be developed by the NCERT

Do the students have the right to choose what subjects to study?

Yes, students have that flexibility. For example, it is not necessary for Arts student to learn only History or Geography. The student has full right to decide and opt for Physics and Biology along with English and Sanskrit as their subjects in their school education.

Students will be given the option to choose whatever subject combinations they like. Schools will have to adjust individual student subject lists accordingly. There won’t be any compartmentalization like Arts or Science.
