Supreme Court refuses to postpone UPSC Civil Services exams, scheduled for Oct 4

Supreme Court on Wednesday declined the request to postpone UPSC Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, scheduled for October 4.

A Bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar, asked the Centre to consider granting one more chance to those aspirants who may not appear in their last attempt for the exam due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Supreme Court while refusing to postpone the exam also declined to consider the request to club UPSC civil services exam of 2020 with 2021, and said that this will have a cascading effect on other examinations.

The UPSC counsel had objected to the plea for the deferment of the exams, as it would upset the schedule of the exams.

After a brief hearing on the matter, the bench asked the UPSC counsel to bring on record the reasons for not postponing the exams. 

The plea, filed by Vasireddy Govardhana Sai Prakash and others through advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava, sought that the Civil Services exam should be postponed for two to three months, as Covid-19 cases have been peaking currently and the curve may flatten in this time period. The petitioners also cited incessant rains disrupting daily life in many parts of the country.
