India captain Virat Kohli recently made heads turn when he revealed that he suffered depression during the national side's 2014 tour of England.

At that time, new batting sensation Kohli had gone through a torrid time in England and Wales with successive low-scores in his kitty during the five Tests, aggregating only 134 runs at 13.40.

While Kohli rose to the occasion once again later that year itself and has been going strong ever since, despite an indifferent phase currently, his claims of going through depression stunned many. In this regard, former Indian cricketer Farokh Engineer responded to his claims and asked the 32-year-old how could he go through so much with a lovely wife in Anushka Sharma (on a lighter note).

“How can you be depressed when you have such a lovely wife? “He’s got a child. He’s got every reason to be thankful to God," Engineer told Sportskeeda in a live session on Facebook. He further stressed the ailing disease is 'more in the western world'.

He further opined, “Depression is more in the western world. They talk about it more. But the mind is such a thing that you can never know. Mind is a dreadful thing. We (Indians) have greater strength to fight the demons in our body. We have our ups and downs. But we have got the mental strength to fight. And fight harder and play better, which maybe people like (Marcus) Trescothick and others don’t have."

Though Engineer shared a rather different take on the matter, being factually wrong too as Kohli was unmarried in 2014, Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar had lauded Kohli for sharing his experience and stressing the importance of talking about depression -- a term still not widely accepted or understood by many nationwide.

He had tweeted saying, "@imVkohli, proud of your success & decision to share such personal experiences. These days youngsters are constantly judged on social media. Thousands speak about them but not to them. We need to be able to listen to them and help them flourish." Talking about Virushka, the star couple had been blessed with a baby girl early in January 2021.
