Dilip Kumar won the first ever Filmfare Award in the Best Actor category for his performance in this film. The Awards were instituted from 1954. The film fared well at the box office and was declared a hit and the box-office.

For this film, Dilip Kumar won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for the third time in a row, being his fourth overall. The film was later dubbed in Tamil as Pattaliyin Sabatham (The Proletariat's Vow) in 1958.Naya Daur also inspired Aamir Khan's Academy Award nominated film Lagaan (2001).

Mughal-e-Azam was the first black-and-white Hindi film to be digitally coloured, and the first in any language to be given a theatrical re-release. The colour version, released on 12 November 2004, was also a commercial success.

It also won prizes at international film festivals, including the Boston International Film Festival and the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
