Two men were sentenced to 1,446 years in prison, although those sentences were cut in half to 723 years each because the men confessed

Two executives at a well-known seafood restaurant in Bangkok were sentenced on Wednesday to 1,446 years in prison after being convicted of cheating the public over pay-in-advance buffet offers, although Thailand’s laws stipulate a maximum sentence of 20 years.

Apichart Bowornbancharak and Prapassorn Bowornbancha, executives at Laemgate restaurant, were accused of offering tickets last year for a series of seafood buffets at low prices, including one charging 880 baht (US$10) for a group of 10 people, the Bangkok Post reported.

Customers were required to post orders online and deposit funds into a bank account. An estimated 20,000 people made bookings, Thai PBS reported.

However, the buffets were cancelled after announcements posted online said the restaurant did not have enough produce to meet the demand.About 350 who had placed orders and paid lodged complaints with police, seeking damages of more than 2 million baht.

Apichart and Prapassorn were arrested and charged, and the Criminal Court on Wednesday found them guilty on 723 counts. Both men were sentenced to 1,446 years in prison, although those sentences were subsequently cut in half to 723 years each because the men confessed.
