The festival of Makar Sankranti is dedicated to the sun god. It is observed by Hindus on 14th January each year. The auspicious day marks the transit of the sun into the Capricorn, also known as Makra.

The day also marks the beginning of Uttarayana, a six-month auspicious period. One of the most special aspects of this festival is to do charity and help the needy and poor. People donate various items to the underprivileged.

Clothing- New clothes should be donated to a needy person on the day of Makar Sankranti. Doing so brings prosperity to the home. Donating clothes on this day is called Mahadan.

Ghee- Ghee is considered very auspicious and satisfying the Sun and Jupiter. Ghee is important in the celebration of Makar Sankranti. It is believed that donating pure ghee on the day of Makar Sankranti brings happiness, prosperity and wealth in the house.

Khichdi: Makar Sankranti is also called Khichdi (Khichdi 2021). It is very auspicious to donate khichdi on this day. On this day, donate khichdi made of rice and urad dal to the needy person. Also, donating rice is considered fruitful.

Blanket: Donate blankets to the homeless and needy people and save a life in the harsh winter, the season in which this festival falls. These people live a very hard and miserable life in this season. You can ease their sufferings by donating blankets on this sacred day.

Sesame- Donating sesame seeds to Makar Sankranti is of special importance. On this day, it is considered auspicious to donate things made of sesame to Brahmins. Having warming properties, donating sesame seeds and jaggery food preparations are considered to be very propitious on this day.

Jaggery: Jaggery is considered to be Guru's favorite item. This time on Thursday is the festival of Makar Sankranti. So if you donate jaggery on this day, you will get the grace of Guru. You can donate laddu made from sesame and jaggery. Eating jaggery on this day is also considered auspicious.Having warming properties, donating sesame seeds and jaggery food preparations are considered to be very propitious on this day
