Dussehra, also called Dasara or Vijayadashami, in Hinduism, holiday marking the triumph of Rama, an avatar of Vishnu, over the 10-headed demon king Ravana, who abducted Rama's wife, Sita. The festival's name is derived from the Sanskrit words dasha (“ten”) and hara (“defeat”).

On this day, Simollanghan, Shami Pujan, Aparajita Pujan and Shastra Pujan are to be performed. Shriram defeated Ravana and killed him on the same day. Due to this unprecedented victory, this day is called Vijayadashami. Ravanadahana is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over the country. As the Navratri comes to an end and the entire nation celebrates Vijayadashmi or Dusshera, one village in Uttar Pradesh worships Ravana. Greater Noida's Bisrakh village is said to be the birthplace of the Lanka ruler and a maha yagna is organised to pray for the soul of Ravana on the day of Dusshera.

Sage Vishwa had discovered a self-contained Shivlinga in this area. Since then, the local villagers worship Rishi Vishwa and Ravana. Apart from this, it is said that the ancient tradition of performing special home-havan and peace yajna is going on during the Navratra period to bring peace to the soul of Ravana.

Like Bisarakh in Uttar Pradesh, Ravana is worshiped at Gadchiroli in Maharashtra. Ravana is worshiped by the Gond community at Gadchiroli. In this Gond society, not only Ravana, but all the sons of Ravana have been given the place of deities.

Therefore, Ravana and his sons are also worshiped in this place. According to some beliefs in the Gond community, Ravana was not a bad man. It is also said that Ravana did not defame Sita Devi.

Ravanadahan is not done in Kangra area of Himachal Pradesh. On the other hand, Ravana is worshiped here. Ravana had done great penance to please Mahadev. Satisfied with the strict penance, Shiva bestowed a boon on Ravana. The incident is believed to have taken place in Kangra area. Therefore, it is said that Ravana is worshiped as the best devotee of Bholenath.

Ravana is worshiped in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh. However, in Jodhpur, the tradition of donating chukka pind in the name of Ravana seems to be prevalent. Maudgil Brahmin from this area had come to Jodhpur during the marriage of Ravana. They consider him a descendant of Ravana.

Therefore, Ravanadahan is not done in this society. On the other hand, Pindana is given in the name of Ravana. It is said that Pindana rituals are performed as an ancestor of Ravana and prayers are offered for the peace of Ravana's soul.

Although there is no concrete evidence as to when the Ramayana took place and exactly when Ravana was killed, this group of researchers claims that Ravana was killed about 10,000 years ago.

There is a cave at an altitude of 8000 feet in the dense forest of Ragla. It is said that Ravana's body was kept in a box in the form of Mummy. A special type of coating has been applied to the coffin, which is claimed to have survived for thousands of years.
