In alarming news for the Rajasthan authorities, 37 people, who had attended a wedding ceremony on June 27 in Ajmer, have tested positive for coronavirus.

The bridegroom has also been found to be infected with the coronavirus.

Out of 37 patients, 13 are residents of Pushkar, 18 hailed from Beawar, five from Borunda, and one from Ajmer.

As per the medical department’s estimate, the figure may increase further. Notably, over 200 guests had attended the wedding despite restrictions on the number of guests at wedding celebrations.

The state government had on May 3 issued a notification under the new Rajasthan Epidemic Diseases Ordinance-2020, saying that a penalty of Rs 10,000 would be imposed for organising wedding-related functions and having more than 50 guests.

People who came into contact with the infected people are now being traced. In fact, women who were invited to sing at the ceremony have also tested COVID-19 positive. While tracing the contacts, 14 people from a family of 5 brothers were found to be infected. All of them had attended the wedding.

Reports suggest that the ceremony was organised at a farm located in the cantonment gate. Social distancing norms were reportedly flouted at the program.

Last week, a similar case was reported in Bihar. More than 100 people, who had attended a wedding ceremony, were found to be infected and the bridegroom had also died two days after the marriage.

Nearly 370 guests had attended the wedding event.

Rajasthan had yesterday recorded its biggest single-day spike of 716 cases, taking the total number of COVID-19 positive cases to 21,404. Deaths due to the disease stand at 472 in the state.
