Kanpur Senior Superintendent of Police Dinesh Kumar said, it was raining heavily. The police tried to drive the vehicle fast, as a result of which it hit the divider and overturned, injuring the policemen sitting in it. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Dubey snatched the pistol of a policeman and fled.

Vikas Dubey was brought to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital in Kanpur after being shot in a police encounter, where doctors have declared him dead. Talking to media, a Kanpur police official said that after the vehicle overturned, Vikas Dubey fired the pistol of the injured policemen.
