Woman orders burger of Rs 178, loses over Rs 21,000 in cyber fraud in Noida

A 24-year-old Noida-based software engineer lost Rs 21,865 after she got trapped by cyber criminals after ordering a burger from the popular outlet Burger King via food delivery platform Swiggy.

The woman, Reena Chauhan, a resident of Sector 45, had ordered a burger and snacks for Rs 178 but it failed to be delivered as the outlet had not even opened at the time of placing the order.

However, when she called up a “customer care” number of Swiggy available on the internet, she was asked to provide access to her system via AnyDesk application to process her refund. While her money was never returned, she lost Rs 21,865 as the number turned out to be of cyber criminals.

The contact number used by the woman was in fact a fake number provided by cyber criminals involved in such crime.

After my order was placed, I was promised a delivery in 35 minutes. However, even after waiting till 12.35 pm, I didn’t get my order.

I then contacted Swiggy representatives via a chat on Swiggy FAQ platform and was informed that they are cancelling my order since the restaurant had not opened that time. They cancelled the order almost one-and-a-half hour later,” she said. She said when her order was cancelled, she tried to speak to the customer care representative of Swiggy to get her amount refunded.

I searched for Swiggy customer care contact number on Google and found a phone number – 7001978326.

A man picked up the call and I could even hear some people abusing each other in the background. When I objected to the same, the speaker claimed that he was transferring my call to a manager-level executive at 12.38 pm.

He assured me that my money would be refunded and asked me to download AnyDesk desktop application on my phone. When I did so, he took my mobile’s control and could access my entire system.

He asked me to fill my account details and later filled all details himself and soon Rs. 21865 was deducted from my account,” she said. Reena alleged that after she flagged the deduction, the accused started abusing and told her that the amount would not be refunded and if she complains or makes another call, they will continue to deduct more money from her account.
