Mexican influencer and bodybuilder Odalis Santos Mena who had over one lakh followers on Instagram, died on July 7 after a surgery went wrong.

Reports suggest that Odalis, 23, was recruited by the SkinPiel clinic in Mexico’s Guadalajara to promote a treatment to reduce underarm sweating named MiraDry.

As per a report published in The Sun, the treatment works by using heat energy to remove sweat glands. This also leads to reduction of body odour and underarm hair, it claimed.

Odalis underwent the procedure to treat her excessive underarm sweating that involved removal of her sweat glands during the surgery.

However, she suffered a cardiac arrest after being anesthetised, The New York Post reports. Healthcare workers at the clinic tried to revive her via CPR but Odalis died soon after.

The influencer, in fact, had also endorsed MiraDry on social media claiming that the “no sweat” treatment was safe and effective.

An investigation has been launched while officials said that her death could be due to a “combination of the anesthesia and a steroid” that she might have been taking, the report states. Odalis Santos Mena participated in several bodybuilding competitions and also won the 2019 Miss and Mr Hercules title as well as the Wellness Fitness Juvenile contest, The Sun reports. She was, in the meantime, pursuing a degree in nutrition.
