Aurangabad, Jan 13:As the number of public toilets in the city is very low, the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) gets low marks in the ranking of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Therefore, administrator Astik Kumar Pandey has ordered the construction of 100 new toilets in the city. Of these, 50 toilets will be for women and 50 for men.The issue of public toilets in the city has been discussed for the last several years. Citizens, especially women, have to suffer the most due to lack of public toilets. To date, the AMC has not paid attention to this issue. Although there are public toilets at Aurangpura, Gulmandi, Sarafa, Shahganj, Nirala Bazar, these toilets are dilapidated condition and some are closed due to lack of maintenance.Citizens and traders of the areas have submitted several memorandums to set up toilets. The corporators have also raised their voice in the general body and standing committee meetings, but it was in vain. Currently, there are only a handful of public toilets in the city. Therefore, administrator Pandey has decided to set up public toilets at 100 places in the city. These toilets will be made of fiber that will occupy less space and the cost will be lower.He has directed Nandkishore Bhombe, head of solid waste management department, to prepare a budget for construction of toilets for 50 women and 50 men, informed city engineer Sakharam Panjde. The toilets will be funded from municipal funds or under the smart city campaign.Issue of women's toilets remains unresolvedFunds were provided by the department of women and child welfare for setting up toilets for women in the city. Five spots were also identified for setting up toilets. But due to encroachments and other difficulties, only two of these toilets were completed. Other toilets, however, are still incomplete.
