AMC warns contractor, civic personnel of penal action on finding bio-medical waste in regular garbage

In the wake of Covid-19 and to maintain a clean and hygienic environment in the city, the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) administration has hinted at taking penal action against the supervisors of garbage lifting company as well as AMC''s jawan, if the bio-medical waste is found in the regular garbage. The AMC also instructed the company to lift and transport the waste as per garbage management plan.

The AMC has awarded the contract of lifting garbage from the source and transporting it till the processing plants to P Gopinath Reddy Co. The civic body is paying around Rs 2.5 crore per month to the contractor.

To take stock of the situation, the head of solid waste management (SWM) Cell Nandkishore Bhombe held a meeting with Reddy Co. officials on Tuesday evening. All zone officers and company''s head Murli Reddy and Harsh Reddy attended the meeting.

During the discussion, the civic authorities told the company to direct its staff from accepting bio-medical waste from any of the nine zones in the city. The AMC will be giving a target of lifting the garbage in the jurisdiction of each zone. The contractor should lift the garbage 100 per cent and also segregate it on the spot. The company should increase the number of Ghanta Gadi''s in each zone, and also use the public address system to alert citizens.

The company officials were also told to lift the garbage waste from each COVID Care Centre after segregating it. The AMC officials also gave a schedule of garbage transportation. It stated that the company should transport the garbage collected from the jurisdiction of Zone Nos. 1, 2 and 3 to the Central Octroi Checkpost. The garbage from Zone Nos. 4 and 5 will be transported to Chikalthana processing plant; Zone No. 6 will be processed at Ramnagar-Vithalnagar, and the garbage from Zone Nos. 7, 8 and 9 should be transported to Kanchanwadi fir processing.

The AMC officials also informed in the meeting that the position of Aurangabad city has been elevated in the Cleanliness Survey compared to previous results. Hence united efforts are needed for the inclusion in the top ten of the cities in the next survey.
