Blood banks running dry as collection dwindles

Aurangabad, April 3:

Blood banks in the city are currently facing severe blood shortage. Blood banks have enough stocks only for one to two days. As a result, the lives of needy patients are at stake.

Blood donation decreases every summer. Corona and vaccinations have had a major impact on blood donation this year. The number of blood donation camps has reduced drastically. Patients with various ailments including thalassemia, haemophilia and accident patients need blood for various surgeries. But at present, there is a huge shortage of blood in the blood banks in Aurangabad. Due to the shortage, blood banks are requesting blood donors and camp organizers to come forward. However, the donors are not ready to donate blood due to fear of corona.

Stock in blood banks:

Duttaji Bhale blood bank

There are 110 bags of all blood groups left in Dattaji Bhale Blood Bank. This stock is enough for 2 days. Before Corona, 1200 to 1500 bags of blood were collected from 30 to 35 camps in a month. Around ten to fifteen donors used to come for blood donation. Now donors have to be called for donation, said PRO Appasaheb Somase.

Aurangabad blood bank

Before corona, an average of 750 blood bags was collected per month. But now that number is much lower. Only 350 bags were collected in February. There was a further decline in March as only 175 blood bags were collected in the entire month. There is a humble appeal to the people through all the blood banks in the city to organize blood donation camps, said Shamrao Sonawane, PRO, Aurangabad Blood Bank.

Box:

Lokmanya blood bank

About 700 to 800 blood bags were collected in the month before the corona outbreak. But this number has now come down to 200 to 250. This stock is enough for one day. Religious, political, social organizations and housing societies should organize blood donation camps so that there is no shortage of blood, appealed Roshan Sonawane, director, Lokmanya Blood Bank.

Two days stock in divisional blood bank

The divisional blood bank in the GMCH had 1,315 blood bags in March last year. But only 242 blood bags were collected in March this year. There were only 5 blood donation camps in this entire month. At present, the blood bank has enough blood for two days, said Hanuman Rule, PRO, divisional blood bank.

Donate blood before vaccination

Currently, the vaccination campaign is underway. Donors cannot donate blood for 28 days after receiving the vaccine and again for 28 days after taking the second dose. This is affecting blood donation. Therefore, blood banks have appealed to donate blood before taking the corona vaccine.
