Demand for dry fruit declines by 30 to 35 per cent

Aurangabad, May 5:

The holy month of Ramzan is currently underway. Demand for dry fruits, dates and fruits specially increases as people break the day long fast by consuming these delicasies. However, for the second year in a row, the demand for dry fruits has declined by about 30 to 35 per cent due to the outbreak of coronavirus. According to the trading community, demand has declined due to the economic downturn of the majority people.

During the month of Ramzan, the members of the Muslim community keep fast throughout the day. While breaking the fast the community members consume dry fruits like dates, cashews, almonds, pistachios and fruits which provide the required calories to the body drained throughout the day. Therefore, the demand for dry fruits increases by 20 to 25 per cent during this period. However, traders say that this year has again witnessed a decline in sales.

Demand fell for the second year in a row

Coronavirus had caused havoc during the month of Ramzan last year. Even then, trade was closed for a whole month. As a result, demand fell by 25 per cent. However, the sales rose as many doctors adviced corona patients to consume dry fruits as they are beneficial for boosting immunity. But as cases are rising again and a lockdown has been imposed by the government this year too, the demand has again declined by about 30 to 35 per cent during Ramzan, said trader Mustak Shaikh.

There is not much difference in price as compared to last year. Although there is not much difference in the price of dry fruits, the demand has declined by 30 to 35 per cent over last year due to the deteriorating economic condition of the people said, wholesale trader Raju Agrawal.
