Nursing college student attempts suicide over harassment

Aurangabad, Feb 6:

A student from Kamal Nayan Bajaj Nursing College tried to end life on Friday evening by consuming poisonous stuff over harassment from the college.

The student, Sahil Vijay Lavhare (Beed), is undergoing treatment at the ICU in Bajaj Hospital. The doctors stated his condition stable.

According to details, the student stays in a rented room at Mahunagar in Beed bypass. Sahil and other students did a survey in Wadgaon Kolhati on Friday.

He was showed absent yesterday in attendance justice because he had not done an assignment. The college administration informed Sahil’s brother on the phone.

When his brother phoned Sahil, who did not receive the call.

His brother called his roommate, who informed the former that Sahil had consumed poisonous stuff. Meanwhile, Rashtravaid Vidyarthi Congress (RVC) members staged sit-in agitation in front of college’s main entrance demanding the removal of college principal Supriya Chinchpure.

RVC Marathwada president Prashant Kadam, State unit general secretary Sadiq Shaikh, Amit Kute, Amol Dhandedhar and others raised slogans. Police inspector of Satara Police Station Surendra Malale reached the college and tried to pacify the students.

He told that a complaint would be registered if the youths stage agitation without permissions. A group of students said that the college harasses them over trivial things like not shaving or not using a shoe pair. His brother Sameer Lavhare said that the Government had sanctioned the students' scholarship, but, they were not given for many months.

“Sahil agitated for the scholarship. After scholarship was given to Sahil, other students too demanded it. He had also agitated for the college's closure during COVID peak period on the line of other colleges. Since then, he was being harassed by the college authority. He was showed absent even though he was present. All the students have not submitted assignment, however, he was showed absent yesterday over the assignment,” he added.

Chief administrative officer of Bajaj Hospital Dr Natasha Verma said that an enquiry would be conducted through a committee. “Those students who pay the fee are refunded the amount on receiving a scholarship from the Government. It is not an irregularity. The action would be against the principal after verifying the complaints,” she said.

In his suicide note, Sahil said that he was ending his life over harassment from the college. “My family members had no time to understand me, otherwise, I would not have taken this extreme step. My family members do not trust me. I was not ready for the nursing course. I faced mental harassment from the college many times. I tolerated this just for education. I have no energy to tolerate this, so, I am ending my life. No one should be held responsible,” he added.
