Police begin probe in lady doctor molestation case

The police have taken serious cognizance of a woman doctor’s molestation incident and have started investigation with the help of CCTV camera footage on the complaint lodged by the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) though the victim has not lodged a complaint.

The GMCH dean, Dr Kanan Yelikar, said that the criminals, who intimidated the victim with a knife, have been caught in the CCTV cameras. Police have obtained its footage and are screening it to trace out the criminals and nab them.

Dr Yelikar said that a woman faced the horrible incident when she was on her way to her duty on foot on the GMCH campus late night on Wednesday. Two criminals abruptly appeared before her, intimidated her with a knife and dragged her into the nearby shrubs. She mustered courage and screamed for help, raising an alarm which forced the criminals to run from the spot. The victim did not lodge a complaint but the GMCH did after a meeting with the commissioner of police Nikhil Gupta. Police have initiated investigation, she added.

Deputy dean Dr Bharat Sonawane said that police on Thursday obtained and screened the footage of CCTV cameras installed in front of NRH Hostel and ophthalmology department. Both the suspects have been caught in the cameras. One out of three cameras on the road leading to the super specialty block is not working while the footage of other cameras is not clear.

GMCH deputy dean Dr Kailas Zine said that the hospital administration immediately started taking necessary steps and roadside shrubs have been cleaned. Superintendent Dr Suresh Harbade said that the night presence of security guards has been increased and they will accompany every woman coming to her duty and returning to her hostel at night. Defunct streetlights will be changed and more cameras will be installed.

Anti social elements rampant

Anti-social elements are rampant on the GMCH campus both in day and at night. Moreover, there are many who keep loitering around the hospital and hostels when they have no business to do with the hospital. Drunkards and gamblers are seen active there and they are turning dangerous to the people working and staying on the campus.
