Rare kidney transplant done at Bajaj Hospital, both recipient and donor carried Covid antibodies

Aurangabad, Feb 11: In a commendable feat in the field of medicine, a kidney transplant of recipient and donor with Covid antibodies was performed at the Kamalnayan Bajaj Hospital, recently.

Sagar Malle (26), who was under dialysis for the last two years due to old kidney ailment, decided to go for kidney transplant. Sagar’s parents are labourers. Kidney of his mother matched with him and after all the tests the date of operation was fixed, with the support of the hospital.

However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic all the surgeries were postponed. When the operations restarted and all permissions obtained again, it was observed that both donor and recipient are the carriers of Covid antibodies.

This was a big challenge as there was no precedent for such transplant in the region. However, nephrologist at Bajaj Hospital Dr Sameer Mahajan accepted the challenge and with the help of surgeon Dr Sharad Somani, Dr Aditya Yelikar and transplant coordinator Amol Mudliyar, a successful transplant was done last month. Sagar and his mother are doing well.

Hospital chairman C P Tripathi, chief administrative officer Dr Natasha Verma, medical director Dr Milind Vaishnav congratulated the doctors.

Dr Mahajan said the people should not feel fear of corona and should go for major surgeries. Sagar thanked Kamalnayan Bajaj Hospital for giving him a new life.
