Aurangabad, July 13:

The Supreme Court has refused to intervene in the decision of the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court disqualifying Shakuntala Ramesh Chavan, Sarpanch of Chicholi Gram Panchayat in Partur tehsil of Jalna district. As a result, Sarpanch Shakuntala Chavan has been disqualified for the rest of the term.

Sopan Vishwanath Katare and others had filed a dispute with the Jalna district collector seeking disqualification of Chavan for not holding monthly meetings, gram sabha and women's gram sabha. Outraged that the collector had rejected their application, they filed a petition in the Aurangabad bench through adv Vaibhav Kulkarni. During the hearing, the court revoked the decision of the collector. Also, Chavan was disqualified from the post of Sarpanch for the rest of the term. Subsequently, Chavan had filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court. However, the apex court rejected Chavan's plea, refusing to intervene in the Aurangabad bench's decision.
